A few years ago, after living through Hurricane Maria and its aftermath (I was in San Juan, PR at the time, a resident for 32 years) followed by the Pandemic of recent times, I decided, after decades of working as a portrait photographer, to commence a series in which my subjects would close their eyes and envision a better world for all. I asked those that agreed to participate to close their eyes for a few silent minutes during which time I documented their faces as their minds went in any private directions. I did not ask prior nor after the moment of silence what came to their minds. Contrary to much of my previous work, in which the image would usually seek and establish eye contact, this project is, in part, defined by closed eyes. I believe it is within the active dream-conscious state of imagination, we can inch towards a better world, a better set of circumstances for all.
